Toasted Caraway Cheese Canapes

These cheese and caraway hors d`oeuvres always get rave reviews, and can be made ahead and frozen, making them perfect for entertaining.

1 egg
4 ounces cream cheese
1 onion, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon chives
18 slices rye bread, cocktail size
4 teaspoons caraway seeds


1. Beat egg and mix with softened cream cheese, onion, salt, pepper and chives until well blended.
2. Spread mix on bread slices. Sprinkle with caraway seeds. (to serve without freezing, proceed to broiling instructions) Freeze on flat surface. When firm, pack in containers with freezer paper between layers. Return to freezer.
3. To serve, broil 4" from flame until brown. Serve hot.
