Main Ingredient
Cooking Method
1 cup butter, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 egg, separated
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sour cream
grated rind of 1 orange, no white pith
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
1/4 cup orange juice
1/3 cup Grand Marnier, or cheaper Triple Sec or other orange liquor
2 tablespoons blanched slivered almonds

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream together butter and one cup of sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolks.

Sift together the dry ingredients and add them, alternately with the sour cream, stirring until smooth. Stir in the orange rind and chopped walnuts.

Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry and fold into the batter. Grease a nine-inch cake pan and pour in the batter. Bake 50 minutes at 350 or until cake tests done.

Combine remaining half cup of sugar, orange juice, and liquor and spoon the mixture over the hot cake. Decorate the top with almonds. Let cake cool before removing from pan.
