Mandarin Orange Muffins

My Dad made these breakfast muffins often - they are wonderful, and one of his best breakfast recipes.

12 muffins
1/3 cup milk
11 ounces mandarin orange sections, canned
1 1/2 cups flour
1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup vegetable shortening
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon


Drain oranges well, spread out on paper towels. Mix flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, 1/2 cup sugar and allspice in bowl. Cut in shortening. Add drained oranges and mix lightly. Combine egg and milk, add all at once to flour. Mix until moistened. Spoon into muffin pans about 3/4 full.

Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes.

While cooking, mix remaining 1/4 cup sugar with cinnamon, and melt butter.

Remove muffins from oven. While hot, dip the tops in melted butter, and roll in sugar/cinnamon mixture.
