Half and Half Cookies

These incredibly rich cookie bars are one of my favorites - half light meringue, half chocolate - they are wonderful and you can't eat just one!

1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup sugar
2 eggs, separated
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 6 oz. package chocolate chips


Heat oven to 350. Butter a 12x8x2" pan. Mix butter with 1/4 cup each of the brown sugar and white sugar until fluffy. Add egg YOLKS and vanilla. Sift the flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder together and add to the batter.

Place in pan and top with chocolate chips.

Beat egg WHITES until stiff, then beat in remaining brown sugar. Spread over topping and bake 30 minutes.

Cut into squares while still warm.
